Appoint former President Goodluck Jonathan As Special Envoy on Peaceful Transition Of Power in African Countries- Igbo Democractic Forum Charges Africa Union(AU)

Attai Audu Jos.

President of Igbo Democratic Forum (IDF) and Co- Chairman, Nigerians Living Outside Their Home States, (NILOTHS) Chief Chidi Ndu, on Tuesday, called on the African Union (AU) to appoint former President Goodluck Jonathan as its Special Envoy on Peaceful Transitions in African countries to work for Peaceful transfer of power by democrtic means rather than throuy military coups in Africa.

Chief Ndu in a statement issued in Jos to newsmen, decried the resurgence of military coups in Africa countries, saying what is happening in some of the African countries at the moment is retrogressive and undemocratic which do not promote democratic institutions on the African continent.

The IDF President warned that Africa countries should not be allowed to fall into the hands of those that promote autocratic rule at a time other nations of the world are moving ahead to advance the promotion of Democractic governance and institutions across the countries of the world.

He suggested that the sit-tight leaders could be encouraged to leave the stage if Africa Union (AU ) appoint a well respected leader and a symbol of democracy and peaceful transition like Good luck Jonathan to go round to talk to such leaders to quit the stage when the ovation is loudest.

Chief Ndu said, ” I believe former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria has that quality seeing that he set a good example when he was a sitting president.

According to him, Jonathan peacefully handed over to President Muhammad Buhari without challenging the results of the 2015 elections.”

Chief Ndu said Nigeria will never return to Military rule despite all the challenges facing the country such as corruption, insecurity and socio-economic downturn.

“In spite of all the aforementioned, Nigeria has grown beyond era of military rule, as Nigeria has become the beacon of hope of the entire black race .

He added that what is expected of Nigerians at this point of their history is for them to understand their differences and come together as one united nation.

Ndu added that had it been Nigerians were patient and not given to sentiments in 2015 and allowed Ex
President Jonathan to continue to be on the saddle for another four years in office, Nigeria would have gone past it’s current stage in her quest for nation building cum evolution.

“There is a legal rule in Latin that says “Nemo dat quod non habet”, which means “no one gives what they do not have.” In 1999 when democracy was bequeathed to us by the military, it did so based on its ability. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that, we just came out of an era where the various tribes, ethnic and religious groups were bound together and ruled by the military chiefly without an independent legislature and Judiciary.

“Invariably, all our differences, misgivings, fears and apprehensions could have been ironed out over the years, if the right leaders were in the saddle of power in the country”

Chief Ndu added that now that 2023 is by the corner,
What Nigeria need is visionary leaders that have what it takes to transform into new era of development in the country .

Insecurity: Plateau Rep Gagdi Writes Buhari, Decries Govt Shortcomings.

Attai Audu Jos

A member of the House of Representatives from Plateau state, Rep. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi has said that Nigeria as a country continues to witness blood baths arising from insecurity due to the failure of containment policies and strategies adopted by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

In an open letter addressed to the President and made available to journalists on Sunday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker stated that the failure of the Buhari government to deal decisively with factors indicative of rising animosity in the country, mutual suspicion and religious fault lines are responsible for the recent upsurge in the security challenges in the country.

According to him, “the federal government strategies towards addressing the spate of insecurity in the country have proven to be ineffective and have failed to deal with the security challenges in the country and have failed to guarantee safety of the lives of Nigerian people.”

In the highly worded open letter to the President, the APC Lawmaker said that the renewed attack in Jos, Plateau state revealed the lack of leadership at the centre to decisively address reported cases of attacks on communities in a just and equitable manner.

He said: “On 29th day of May 2015, you resurrected the hope and optimism of bringing back robust economic transformation devoid of Corruption and free from insecurity via your 3-Point Agenda when you spoke highly about defending and protecting the Constitution and by simple reflection, you swore to uphold the primary responsibility of Government as enshrined in Section 14(b) thus:” the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government”.

“You declared explicitly that equitable and efficient strategies would be adopted by all the machineries of Government to end the wanton destructions of lives and properties particularly those associated with the activities of Boko Haram which hitherto had extended beyond the North East to the North Central and other parts of Nigeria.

“Indeed, and without doubt, you spoke a “language” well understood by the enemies of peace and progress and you were able to subdue them “technically.”

“You worked assiduously to reinforce due process and transparency in the public service; revived a breathless railway sub sector from the transport sector; engendered agricultural revolution in key productive sectors like the Rice revolution and Potatoes value chain. You did not waste time to focus on the poor and the vulnerable Nigerians hence you introduced the social net programs focusing on conditional cash transfer schemes, the Anchor Borrower program, School Feeding Program, Safe School Initiative and so on.

“But your Excellency, about six years down the line and having secured a second term mandate from Nigerians, it is heart wrenching to note that insecurity has worsened in the country leading to interrogative concerns by people such as What is Anti-Corruption without Security; What is the value of food if farms are not safe for agriculture to thrive; What is the significance of infrastructure devoid of security?” Gagdi queried.

Stressing further, the lawmaker who chairs the House committee on Navy stated that “as it is, they can no longer hold water in a cup let alone in a basket. The gaps are becoming wider by the day with serious concerns such as the plight of many school children still in the den of captivity; brazen daylight attacks on communities and travelers which have become almost unabated; the recent shameful raid on the highly fortified Nigeria Defence Academy, ( NDA) Kaduna; and the metropolitan attacks in Jos, Plateau State among others. All these have heightened fears of insecurity in Nigeria.”

“The recent merger of command and control of the special military Operations in Plateau State extending to parts of Kaduna state and Taraba State code named Operations Safe Haven (OSH) with the office of the General Officer Commanding 3rd Armoured Division, Rukuba, Jos; has failed to yield the desired results when compared to the successes recorded during the pre-merger period.

“The abysmal budgetary allocations and releases to the Armed forces and other security organizations leave less to be desired in transforming the law enforcement agencies towards becoming much more efficient and proactive in addressing insecurity challenges in the country.

“The poor implementation of the Community Policing component of the Police Act 2020 which I sponsored and was signed by you on the 16th day of September 2020. Questions have been raised as to where the trained civilians were deployed to. What are their current contributions to security in the communities that they serve? What has been the level of motivation for the implementation of the other components of the Act regarding responsibilities and so on?

“The silence towards a quick resolution of the impasse between the Police Service Commission and the Office of the Inspector General of Police concerning the recruitment of personnel has created a serious security gap.
“The unjust Amnesty to repentant Boko Haram fighters under Operation Safe Corridor policy even when many displaced Nigerians have not been adequately rehabilitated and reintegrated in their homeland is torturing to the psyche of many Nigerians.”

Speaking on the current situation in his home state, the Plateau Lawmaker said “Plateau is undoubtedly a miniature Nigeria. It is the North of the South and the South of the North. You were once in Jos as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 3rd Armoured Division and I have no doubt in my mind that you are aware that the serenity of the State and the peaceful nature of its people is second to none in Nigeria. The State has always been known as the Home of Peace and Tourism.

“However, the resurgence of killings and mayhems that have visited the state in the last few weeks might have revealed a laxity of leadership at the center in being proactive towards addressing JUSTLY and EQUITABLY reported cases of attacks and threats to lives and properties.

“Today, the externalities of the nature of insecurity in Plateau points to the failure of your government to deal decisively with the factors that have seemingly become indicative of rising animosity, mutual suspicion, religious fault lines and the dangerous perception of the “them” and “us” syndrome”. Such factors he said include slow response to stem the tides of attacks in local communities against a quick response to selected incidences of violence by some security outfits among others.

He maintained that “It is thus unfortunate and unacceptable for my people and indeed the good people of Plateau State to continue to experience unprovoked recurrent attacks on their communities, whereas the Governor has tried in the last six years to ensure some peace and stability and the Governor has repeatedly solicited for your kind support in logistics and actual security interventions.

“It behoves on me as a representative of the people to follow suit by reiterating on a general note that the current federal governments’ strategies towards addressing spate of insecurity across the country are no longer effective and have failed to deal squarely with the challenges of banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity.

“To this end, only a quick response may avert a calamity capable of throwing the entire nation into unrest. With particular reference to Plateau State, it should even be quicker given the miniature nature of Plateau State. And God forbid that this is allowed to spiral out of control.

“It will amount to whipping sentiments and only taking the “Donkey to the River and denying it the right to drink water” if I do not draw your Excellency’s attention to what need to be done to address insecurity and particularly restore peace to the people of Plateau State and to also engender confidence in your leadership and ultimately safeguard lives and properties.”

“I immediately called the the Area Commander in charge of Southern Zone Plateau and he informed me that he received the same security report. He told me to alert the communities and let everybody keep vigil”

He added the state Commissioner of Police has been informed of this development and the CP Edward Egbuka confirmed to him, that has been briefed on the development and advised that as a local government, we should try and see what can do.

“I appealed that proactive measures be taken because what has been happening in Jos started a long time ago but proactive measures were not taken with the view to nip it in bud.”

“Yesterday our people kept 24 hours vigil,” he said.

Laven called on security agencies and government not to only confirm that they were aware of the influx of terrorists but they should do something about it adding that they should step up their game and come to the rescue of the people.

According to him, the armless civilians cannot defend themselves and hence they are calling on security agencies to join hands with the Tarok natives to chase away the the invading terrorists.

“As a local government, we know that our first priority is to protect lives and property of our people, because the first responsibility of government is to secure lives and property.

“We are calling on security agencies to come to our aid but we are warning that when they come they shouldn’t take side with one group especially the Invaders.

He further stressed “When they come, let us go to the bush and chase the assailants because we are the ones that they are invading. When the attack occur, which they had confirm to us that it is imminent, they should not come and cage us while the assailants are killing us.”

“We do not have the weapons but we have the might and wherewithal to assist security agencies to chase away these assailants. We know that security agencies have been stretched but they need to deploy more personnel to Langtang, don’t allow the innocent citizens to be killed,” Laven stressed.

He commended Plateau State House of Assembly members for advising local governments to stop the recruitment of teachers and instead engage Vigilantee to protect their communities.

Laven said that people would only talk about employment when they are alive stressing that those that were killed in Bassa and other places will not wake up and work again.

“Security is paramount and the House of Assembly took the right decision.”

He also called on ethnic groups on the Plateau to unite and end the bloodletting in the state.

According to him, if one ethnic group fold their hands that it is not their ethnic group that were being killed, after the killers are done with one, they would go after the other.

Plateau attacks : Jos NMA laments Increasing population Of Victims In hospitals and Dead Bodies in mortuaries.

* Striking resident doctors in JUTH recall members over emergency .

Attai Audu

Jos.

The Nigerian Medical Association in Plateau state on Thursday expressed deep concern over what it described as the increasing population of the hospitals’ emergency wards and mortuaries by victims of attacks and killings in various communities in Plateau state .

Daily Independent gathered on Thursday that following the attacks, the striking resident doctors at the Jos University Teaching Hospital have recalled their members “on compassionate “ground to enable them attend to emergencies occasioned by the crisis in the state

In a statement issued on Thursday to newsmen in Jos, the NMA lamented the security situation in the state saying that a situation where people face the brazen reality of being attacked, injured and or murdered in cold blood while their homes, farmlands and means of livelihoods are completely destroyed with no end in sight to these hostilities was unacceptable.

The statement jointly was signed by the state chairman of the NMA,Dr. Innocent Emmanuel, and the Secretary ,Dr. Bapiga’an William.

According to them, “The Plateau State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association is saddened and disillusioned by the persistent and vicious acts of inhumanity currently ravaging the society and exerting a great toll on the physical and psychological wellbeing of the masses across the state.,”

“The innocent, harmless, accomodating and committed citizens of Plateau State have continued to live under the perennial unsavoury reality of perpetual terrorism manifesting as kidnappings for ransom, rape, maimings and killings as well as threats of total annihilation.

” On a daily basis, people are kidnapped from their houses and living with the fear that same will happen the next day elsewhere or in their neighbourhood unabatedly, with huge sums paid as ransom.

“This worrisome and sad turn of events is severely bleeding the resources of the people and ultimately wrecking the economy of the state in general, resulting in further increase in the sufferings that have characterized the life of ordinary citizens who abinitio have mostly been living below ,at or only slightly above the poverty line.

They said NMA frowns exceedingly at the unabating and wanton destruction, injury and killings which are one too many, stressing that the people of Plateau deserve better representation from their leaders as every life is indeed sacred, and the right to life, a fundamental human right of every Nigerian citizen which should be guaranteed by the Government.

” Both the United Nations Charter as well as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognize this inalienable right that all peoples possess with no bias to any human sentiment of tongue, creed, political leaning or field of endeavour.”

They express deep concern as the victims of these unwarranted attacks continue to populate their hospitals emergency wards and mortuaries.

The NMA leaders called on the government and the security forces to genuinely commit themselves to doing more to prevent further incidences rather than taking reactive approaches on issues that a little more mindfulness, sincerity and commitment could nip in the bud.

They also calls for calm across the state and entreats citizens to remain law abiding and not to take the laws into their hands, but to only seek all available legal means to forestall any further escalation of the already grotesque and appalling situation.

“We equally call on religious and political leaders to be mindful and sensitive of their comments especially in public domain which have the propensity to incite members of the public and enflame further, the embers of discord among the peace loving citizens of Plateau State and the country at large. Leaders must act as leaders both in private and public circles.

“A society that abhors justice is only opening her doors to anarchy and lawlessness.
Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done for all sorts and shades of criminality because this is the only way that sustainable peace can actually be achieved.
The evil perpetrators of these heinous crimes cannot continue to remain “unknown gunmen” for close to two decades now”,The statement added.

Similarly, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors JUTH branch, Dr Nanpon Nalda on Thursday told newsmen in Jos that his members who had been on strike for the past weeks had been recalled to the hospital to enable them attend to emergency situations .

Nanpon said “In view of the current situation in JOS, I reached out to the NARD leadership for a compassionate waiver for ARD JUTH to attend to emergencies .
The indefatigable NARD president in consultation with other NARD leaders has graciously approved this waiver for our members in JUTH to attend to emergencies arising from the ongoing in JOS and environs.

“While we call on government to live up to it’s responsibility of protection of lives and properties, we assure the general populace of our unwaivering commitment to offering health services to them.
